Measurements of time-variable gravity show mass loss in Antarctica.
Using measurements of time-variable gravity from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment satellites, we determined mass variations of the Antarctic ice sheet during 2002-2005. We found that the mass of the ice sheet decreased significantly, at a rate of 152 +/- 80 cubic kilometers of ice per year, which is equivalent to 0.4 +/- 0.2 millimeters of global sea-level rise per year. Most of this...
متن کاملtime-variable gravity determination from the grace gravity solutions filtered by tikhonov regularization in sobolev subspace
the grace mission has provided scientific community time-variable gravity field solutions with high precision and on a global scale. the grace mission was launched on march 2003. this mission consists of two satellites that pursue each other in their orbit. distance between two satellites in orbit is measured continuously to an accuracy of better than 1 micron using kbr system placed in satelli...
متن کاملMars Global Surveyor Measurements of the Martian Solar Wind Interaction
The solar wind at Mars interacts with the extended atmosphere and small-scale crustal magnetic fields. This interaction shares elements with a variety of solar system bodies, and has direct bearing on studies of the long-term evolution of the Martian atmosphere, the structure of the upper atmosphere, and fundamental plasma processes. The magnetometer (MAG) and electron reflectometer (ER) on Mar...
متن کاملGGP (Global Geodynamics Project): an international network of superconducting gravimeters to study time- variable gravity
The Global Geodynamics Project (GGP) is an international network of superconducting gravimeters (SG) first established in 1997 and further extended in 2003. It was decided during the last IUGG assembly in 2007 to move to a permanent network hosted by IAG and become part of GGOS. Several new locations are being planned to extend the network to about 30 stations in 2008/2009. One of the present t...
متن کاملLocalized spectral analysis of global satellite gravity fields for recovering time-variable mass redistributions
A spatiospectral localization method is discussed for processing the global geopotential coefficients from satellite mission data to investigate time-variable gravity. The time-variable mass variation signal usually appears associated with a particular geographical area yielding inherently regional structure, while the dependence of the satellite gravity errors on a geographical region is not s...
